Here is your sports recap from yesterday:
Boston scores to note:
The Bruins defeated the Buffalo Sabres 4-3 to clinch a trip to the next round. David krejci scored two goals, while the other goals came from Mark Recchi and Miroslav Satan. The Bruins were up 2-0 in the second before a Dennis Wideman turnover gave the Sabres a goal. The Bruins scored later in the period to extend their lead to two, but Buffalo scored 22 seconds later. Satan scored his goal in the third period, and Buffalo scored with their goalie pulled. In the end, the Bruins held on for the win.
The Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 13-12. The Sox jumped out to a 5-0 on Dana Eveland, but Josh Beckett could not hold the lead and was pulled after 3+ innings. Jason Varitek was the hero of the night with four RBIs and three hits.
The Montreal Canadiens beat the Washington Capitals, 4-1. Jaroslav Halak made 53 saves for the Habs, pushing the Caps to the brink. Game seven will be tomorrow night. Mike Camalleri scored twice for the Habs.
The Orlando Magic beat the Charlote Bobcats, finishing off their sweep.
The Chicago Blackhawks beat the Nashville Predators, advancing to the next round.
The Milwakee Bucks beat the Atlanta Hawks, tying up that series.

The Boston Bruins are currently fighting the Montreal Canadiens, Philly Flyers, New York Rangers, and Atlanta Thrashers for the playoffs. Meanwhile, they also want the Toronto Maple Leafs to stay in last in the Eastern Conference. So, what can happen?
Montreal 3 GR 86 pts
Boston 3 85
Philly 3 84
New York 4 82
Atlanta 3 81
The Rangers, Canadiens, and Flyers took the season series with the Bruins. But the Bruins have the advantage on Atlanta. The Bruins play Buffalo, Carolina, and in Washington to close out the season. The Maple Leafs, two points behind Florida and Tampa Bay, play the Canadeins, Flyers, and Rangers. The Rangers and Flyers play each other twice. The worst case scenerio would be the Bruins not winning another game, and the Flyers and Rangers geting three points out of ther games, and the Maple Leafs move out mof the celler. best case? Bruins win all their games, other teams lose as muh as possible. Here is a scenerio where the Bruins can stay in the playoffs:
Bruins win two games=89 points
Flyers win all games=88 points
Rangers win two games=86 points
That would mean the Bruins would have bat two teams, and the Flyers would have swep New York. Another scenerio:
Bruins win one game=87 points
Flyers win two games=88
Rangers win two games=86 points
I don’t know who won the Flyers-Rangers games, just that they each won two games. In this scenerio the Bruins would be behind the playoffs, but still in. One more:
Bruins win one game, lose in OT= 88 points
Philly loses one, beats New York twice= 88 poins
Rangers win two, lose to Philly twice= 86 points
The Flyers would get the tie breaker, I believe. In these scenerios, the Bruins can make the playoffs still. They are still in control of their own destiny. But they play some tough teams, and will need some help. Remember to keep coming to Total Bases and BestBostonSports for more info and coverage!
Q: Do you think the Red Sox will be as good as last year?
– Bree (via BBS.com)
A: Better. I love the Red Sox’s depth, more than any other team. If a guy like Ellsbury or Youkilis goes down the Sox are still a playoff contender. If Evan Longoria or Carl Crawford go out, forget about it. The pitching is by far thye best, and the offense is as good as anyone, (except New York) in my opinion.
Q: Could Mark Savard be having a more unlucky year ???
A: Probally not. It’s too bad the Bruins did not retailiate on Cooke Thursday night, they should have. This hurts the Bruins so much, who I think have been playing great. The Bergeron-Recchi-Sturm line is fantastic, and Blake Wheeler looks like he did at the begining of last season. If they had Savard, I could see a serious playoff run. But things look much more bleak now. The NHL is making a new head-shots rule, but it might be too little too late. The hit on Seabrook of Chicago was horrible, as well as Ovechikin’s on Campbell (ironic name).
The Celtics beat the Rockets, 94-87. Pierce had 26 points. The Celtics take on the Mavericks tonight in Dallas at 9pm.
The Red Sox lost to the Pirates, 9-7. I was at this game, right behind the on-deck circle. I got autographs from Chuck Tanner and Ron Johnson. David Ortiz hit a two run shot off Paul Maholm. I am in Dunedin tomorrow to see the Sox take on the Jays,
The Flames beat the Sharks, 4-3. The Sharks scored twice in the final two minutes, but the Flames held on to stay tied for the eight seed with Detroit.
The Oilers beat the Redwings, 3-2. Detroit remains in the playoffs by gaining the point in the SO, with the Flames still behind them. Deven Dubynk got his first career win in net for Edmonton.
News and Notes: Yesterday on WEEI’s Dale and Holley, the Bruins Shawn Thornton said he would have liked to knock out Cooke in their fight. I would have liked that too, Shawn.
Ryan Westmoreland has been moved from ICU to NRU in his recovery from brain surgery.
The Red Sox signed Alan Embree.
The Red Sox beat the Cardinals, 7-6. Josh Beckett pitched three perfect innings. The Red Sox no-hit the Cards through seven innings, but they got the bats going vs Randor Bierd. Che-Hsuan Lin got the game winning single in the ninth inning.
The Cleveland Cavaliers beat the San Antonio Spurs, 97-95. Lebron James and Shaquile O’Neal did not play. Delonte West picked up 16 points.
The New York Knicks beat the Atlanta Hawks, 99-98. The Knicks held on after Al Horford’s basket was reveiwed and revealed to be after the buzzer.
The Dallas Stars beat the Washington Capitals, 4-3. The Stars where down two goals to the best team in the NHL and came back to score three in the third period on six shots. Marty Turco had a career best 49 saves.
News and Notes: Marc Savard has been diagnosed with a grade 2 concussion after the devastaing hit from Matt Cooke on Sunday. Savard was cleared to fly and returned to Boston yesterday for further examination. Savard said he did not remember taking the shot or the hit. The real nature of the concussion will be watched over the next 4-5 days. His timetable for return in uncertain.
Jonathan Papelbon pitched an inning for the Red Sox, a perfect inning.
The Celtics Micheal Finley is expected to join the team in Milwakee for tonight’s game. Marcus Landry was assigned to the NBA D-league.
The Bruins have assigned Dany Sabuan to Providence, and recalled defenseman Jeff Penner. That tells me that Andrew Fernece is not ready to return on the roadtrip, and they need a backup defenseman.
The Bruins play Phil Kessel and the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight, and the Celtics take on the
