The Weekend in Baseball

We will resume our Hello Offseason series this week. But right now we have a feature here for you called Yesterday in Baseball. We will start off with the entire weekend.

* The New York Yankees have reportedly contacted Cliff Lee’s agent. And why shouldn’t they? They do not have the most comfortable situation with pitching, and I have always been one to believe that if you have the assets use them, and with the Yankees case that is money. They do not really need another big name, unless they fail to sign Lee and feel like they need something. If they do not sign Lee and trade a guy like Curtis Granderson, I can see Carl Crawford as an option.

* The Tigers were able to agree on a 2 year, $11.25 mm deal with infielder Jhonny Peralta. Peralta is expected to be the Tigers shortstop with them also resigning Brandon Inge to play third base.

* The Athletics may have won the bid for Japanese right handed Hisashi Iwakuma. There are rumors that if Oakland can sign him, they might trade him to the Milwaukee Brewers for Casey McGee. Milwaukee could use some pitching, and Oakland a third baseman with the loss of Eric Chavez. But after McGhee’s career year, that is unlikely to happen.

* Marlins second baseman Dan Uggla turned down a four year $48 mm extension, stating he wishes to test the free agent market next season. However, another source says he wanted a five year deal. Uggla seems to be on the trade market every offseason, but this may be the year he is finally traded.

* Other Notes:

Red Sox bench coach DeMarlo Hale will interview for the Mets coaching job… Jamie Moyer’s career may be over with his elbow injury in the dominican winter league….. Edgar Renteria will return for a final season…. Scott Podsednik became a free agent declining his mutual option.

Monday Sports Recap- 4/26

Here is your sports recap from yesterday:

Boston scores to note:

The Bruins defeated the Buffalo Sabres 4-3 to clinch a trip to the next round. David krejci scored two goals, while the other goals came from Mark Recchi and Miroslav Satan. The Bruins were up 2-0 in the second before a Dennis Wideman turnover gave the Sabres a goal. The Bruins scored later in the period to extend their lead to two, but Buffalo scored 22 seconds later. Satan scored his goal in the third period, and Buffalo scored with their goalie pulled. In the end, the Bruins held on for the win.

The Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 13-12. The Sox jumped out to a 5-0 on Dana Eveland, but Josh Beckett could not hold the lead and was pulled after 3+ innings. Jason Varitek was the hero of the night with four RBIs and three hits.

The Montreal Canadiens beat the Washington Capitals, 4-1. Jaroslav Halak made 53 saves for the Habs, pushing the Caps to the brink. Game seven will be tomorrow night. Mike Camalleri scored twice for the Habs.

Other Scores:

The Orlando Magic beat the Charlote Bobcats, finishing off their sweep.

The Chicago Blackhawks beat the Nashville Predators, advancing to the next round.

Sunday Mailbag

It’s Opening Day!

Q: it APPEARS a beckett extension is imminent. what do you suppose the chances are theo screws up the v-mart extension? i mean they pretty much have to sign him now that mauer is off the table don’t they?

-Wssoxfan

A: I really don’t like the Beckett deal to be honest. He’s hurt too much, and you just know he’ll break down. I would have let him pitch in a contract year. As for Victor, I’m starting to get worried they don’t sign him. I would have spent the money on a proven hitter, not a good pitcher that has durability problems. I would think they have to sign him at this point, but I just don’t know with Theo. They do have some good catching prospects, Luis Exposito and Mark Wagner.
