TB is Still Here, and With a Recap!

Yes, Total Bases is still here. I have been very busy with theprolaxblog.blogspot.com (remember to go there to help get me on SBN!) and an upcoming YouTube Sports Show. Anyways, here is a very long overdue Sunday Sports Recap!

Well… The Red Sox lost, 4-3 to the Yankees in Yankee Stadium. The Red Sox took the lead in the ninth off Mariano Rivera, with Bill Hall and Mike Lowell driving in the runs. But Jonathan Papelbon surrendered a run and then Hideki Okajima to give the Yankees a win.

But the Patriots won! They beat Buffalo 38-30. The defense was bad, with Darius Butler birned left and right, as well and Brandon Meriwether. But Jered Mayo and Pat Chung had good games! On offense Tom Brady was Tom Brady, with three touchdown passes, two to Randy Moss. Aaron Hernandez also had another awesome day.

In other sports scores: The Jets defeated the Dolphins. Mark Sanchez and Dustin Keller had big games.

The Kansas City Cheifs are 3-0! They beat the 49ers.

The Cowboys actually won a game so the Super Bowl for Dallas is back on! (end sarcasm)

Now for some News and Notes:

* Bruins head coach Claude Jullian said that Blake Wheeler and Tyler Seguin could play center in marc Savard’s absence.

* Jonathan Papelbon was blaming the ump for blowing the game. Phil Cuzzi was bad, but he didn’t give up the hits to Teixiera and Swisher.

* It looks like the Carmelo Anthony deal to the Nets may be off now. I still think he will end up in NY.

* Not much else going on. Remember to check out my YouTube show the internet sport show. It will be up sometime this week. I promise to write here more often now that I am less busy!

The Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 13-12. The Sox jumped out to a 5-0 on Dana Eveland, but Josh Beckett could not hold the lead and was pulled after 3+ innings. Jason Varitek was the hero of the night with four RBIs and three hits.

Total Bases Mailbag 3

Here is the third edition of the TB mailbag. I’m doing it today, tomorrow I will be in Ft. Myers.

Q: How far will the cavs go in the playoffs?

Indians

A: I can see the Cavs going very deep. Though i won’t say they will go all the way, they seem to have trouble with Orlando. The Hawks are very good, and I think they may knock off a team like Cleveland or Boston. But with the Cavs, the loss of Shaq hurt them. I think Jamison may be out a while too, if I’m not mistaken.  The key is, as always, Lebron has to be great. And he will be.

Q: My question for the mailbag is: When will the Sox ever be-knuckle the knuckleball? Tim Wakefield has been pitching for a long time.

When is he going to retire?

Also, does Tom Brady ever make you wanna cry? He seems like a heartbreaker. 🙂

Ted

A: I don’t think Wakefield will retire for a few years. He’s a great option for the rotation. And when he’s on, he’s as unhittable as it gets. His problem has been his back. He was an all-star last year, and arguably the Red sox best pitcher, until the end of July. And don’t forget, he wants that Red Sox all-time wins leader.

I love Brady. Last year was an off year from him coming off ACL surgery. It was an all-around odd year for the Patriots. I hope to see the Pats lock up Brady long term, like the Colts did with Manning. Given the option of the two, I’d take Brady all-day. He did make me wanna cry when he got hurt in the 2008 season opener :(. Expect a bounce back year, in a contract year.

Thanks Everybody! The mailbag will be Sunday at it’s reguler time. Submit your questions here or on the Best Boston Sports.com Message Boards. Again, thank you!

Monday Sports Recap

The Red Sox beat the Cardinals, 7-6. Josh Beckett pitched three perfect innings. The Red Sox no-hit the Cards through seven innings, but they got the bats going vs Randor Bierd. Che-Hsuan Lin got the game winning single in the ninth inning.

The Cleveland Cavaliers beat the San Antonio Spurs, 97-95. Lebron James and Shaquile O’Neal did not play. Delonte West picked up 16 points.

The New York Knicks beat the Atlanta Hawks, 99-98. The Knicks held on after Al Horford’s basket was reveiwed and revealed to be after the buzzer.

The Dallas Stars beat the Washington Capitals, 4-3. The Stars where down two goals to the best team in the NHL and came back to score three in the third period on six shots. Marty Turco had a career best 49 saves.

News and Notes: Marc Savard has been diagnosed with a grade 2 concussion after the devastaing hit from Matt Cooke on Sunday. Savard was cleared to fly and returned to Boston yesterday for further examination. Savard said he did not remember taking the shot or the hit. The real nature of the concussion will be watched over the next 4-5 days. His timetable for return in uncertain.

Jonathan Papelbon pitched an inning for the Red Sox, a perfect inning.

The Patriots re-signed conerback Leigh Bodden. The Pats are also looking into Atlanta Falcons free agent tight end Alge Crumpler.

The Celtics Micheal Finley is expected to join the team in Milwakee for tonight’s game. Marcus Landry was assigned to the NBA D-league.

The Bruins have assigned Dany Sabuan to Providence, and recalled defenseman Jeff Penner. That tells me that Andrew Fernece is not ready to return on the roadtrip, and they need a backup defenseman.

The Bruins play Phil Kessel and the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight, and the Celtics take on the

Friday Sports Recap

Here is a recap of Boston Sports Friday:

The Red Sox lost to the Twins, 5-0. Jon Lester got roughed up in the first inning, but Tim Wakefield looked good. Ryan Kalish and Jose Iglesias got starts.

The Rays beat the Yankees 12-7. Joba Chamberlain struggled in his 1 1/3 innings, while David Price gave up two hits and a walk.

The Cavaleirs beat the Pistons 99-92. Scary moment as Rodeny Stucky collapsed on the bench and was rushed to the hospital. The Pistons say he is OK.

The Lakers lost to the Bobcats, 98-83.

The Sabres beat the Flyers in OT, 3-2. Ryan Miller made 27 saves while Tomas Vanek scored in OT for the winner.

NFL Playoffs

Ok, the NFL season is now over for many teams. But not the Patriots, or 11 others. The playoffs begin with Wild Card weekend next week, and here are some playoff matchups.

Saturday 1:00 pm: Jets at Bengals- Bengals trump the Jets. Period. Sanchez will not get it done. And the Bengals did not give away any stradegy Sunday night. I think they will win by at least a touchdown. But don’t tell Rex Ryan, beacuse according to him there “Is a new dynasty in NY”

Saturday 8:00 pm: Eagles at Cowboys- I have a tough time saying that the ‘Boys will beat the Eagles again. But this QB matchup is so confusing. McNabb and Romo can blow it any time. But I think the Cowboys defense is better and they win a tight one.

Sunday 1:00 pm: Ravens at Patriots- It’s gonna be tough without Welker. But I think the Pats can still be dangerous. Edelman looked good Sunday. But this defense is a tough one. Without Welker now, the Ravens defense has it easier. I still think the Pats win a close game without much scoring.

Sunday 4:40 pm: Packers at Cardinals- This matchup intrigues me the most. Either of these teams can win the Super Bowl. I say the Packers pull it out though. Aaron Rodgers has impressed me.

Contenders and Pretenders- NFL Teams

Here is this week’s Contenders and Pretenders

Patriots: Contenders- Call me biased. But I think if the Pats get in, they can cause serious damage. Hard to call a team with Tom Brady a pretender.

Colts & Saints: Contenders- Do I even have to post this? If a 13-0 team was a pretender then that would be odd.

Bengals: Pretenders- Just don’t see them making it that far into the playoffs. I can see a team like the Patriots or Chargers handling him. Should learn more about them this week vs. San Diego.

Chargers: Contenders- Chargers are good man. Look out for them. They are finally healthy, and have as good as a RB combo as any in the NFL with LT and Darren Sproles.

Steelers: Pretenders- They lost to Cleveland.

Ravens: Contenders- I think they might get a Wild Card spot. They may be dangerous with that defense. I think Ed Reed being hurt has hampered them, along with Terrel Suggs.

Dolphins: Contenders- They beat the Patriots, but lost to the Bills. But Miami can be a tricky team. I think Chad Henne is the real deal. But that defense is not so great.

Jaguars: Prentenders- I just can’t see Jacksonville going any where. Now beat the Colts tonight.

Broncos: Prentenders- They’ll make it. But they won’t beat San Diego or New England in round one. Maybe Cincy, but they’re not going anywhere.

Vikings: ?- Tough one. They are 10-2 and have a great defense, but Brett Favre will screw up sometime, Like in the NFC championship game, just like in 2007.

Packers: Pretenders- They won’t cut it. They’re O-line is killing Aaron Rodgers. No chance.

Eagles: Contenders- I think they got this divison. They can cause some serious damage.

Giants: Contenders- Look out for the G-men. They still have a good defense.

Cowboys: Pretenders- Tony Romo stinks, period.

Falcons: Pretenders- With Ryan and Turner out, Atlanta has problems.

Wild Card: Cardinals- This is a tough team. They beat the Vikings but lost to the 49ers. But they can be a tough playoff opponent.

 Next week: NHL teams

Contenders and Pretenders: MLB Free Agent  Market

Welcome to the first installment of Contenders and Pretenders at Total Bases. Every week we will talk about the teams that are for real in regards to all sports. This week it’s the MLB free agent buyers and sellers.

Red Sox: Contender- I honestly have no clue what the Sox are doing. But I have to put them as a contender for their involvment with the major free agents so far. They are trying to get better, I just think they are not doing it right.

Mariners: Contender- Not for Jason Bay. He’s not going there. Maybe for John lackey, Adrian Gonzalez or Adrian Beltre.

Angels: Pretenders- They will not get Bay or Lackey, I don’t think. They may be sellers with guys like Jaun Rivera and Gary Matthews available.

Yankees: Contenders- Hard to call a team who gets Curtis Granderson a pretender. But I don’t see them doing much more.

Cardinals: Pretenders- They can’t afford Matt Holliday, I don’tsee them doing anything big.

Next week NFL teams- Where do the Patriots rank?
